The vast space of Budapest’s St Stephen’s Basilica becomes truly sensual thanks to the echo of heavenly length. Eight seconds of decay may sound like eternity in the life of a note. Composers usually do not count on environments of such intensive sonic qualities. By contrast, Studio5, a group recently formed by young composers, now presents pieces that do rely on the musical qualities of the Basilica.
Among other things, the intention behind Studio5 is to build a bridge between tradition and innovation, convention and progression. The group is committed to making contemporary music accessible for a wider audience, or as they put it in their programme statement: “We find it important to create a well-informed, young audience who are aware of the values of their own musical tradition.”
