Despite the Film Composers’ Lounge #11 lasting until late the previous evening, numerous enthusiasts gathered early in the morning on March 23rd in the Haydn Hall of the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, to attend the lectures. This year’s lectures were under the thematic focus “Hybrid Production – An Austrian Specificity?”

Judit Varga spoke in her lecture, among other things, about prevailing value judgments between art music and film music.
Judit Varga, composer and Austrian Film Award winner in 2014, addressed several questions in her lecture, including how the prevailing value judgments between art music and film music have come about and what actually distinguishes the two. She also shared insights into her own experiences as a successful composer in both fields. Moreover, she pointed out that when categorizing music into functional and autonomous, there is always a risk of automatically attributing characteristics such as shallowness and artistic dependence to functional music. She finally encouraged the audience to think about value concepts such as good and bad music for themselves and to break down old views.
